Woodland Manor’s Guide to Parks and Open Spaces in Bedford

At Woodland Manor, we are regularly reminded of the beauty of Bedford. Our handsome country house is set in four acres of wonderful woodland gardens and surrounded by an abundance of trees, shrubs and flowers. Amongst the plentiful foliage forage an amazing array of animals, including squirrels, pheasants and even muntjac deer.

Of course, there are a few other places to enjoy the great outdoors in Bedford, some of which we take a look at in the following post.

Bedford Park

Part of Bedford’s heritage, this beautiful park remains largely unchanged from its original Victorian design. The large outdoor space is ideally located near the centre of the town, offering a natural escape from the hustle and bustle with several copses of Corsican pine and a picturesque lake. Bedford Park also boasts a range of sporting facilities, including a cricket pavilion, swimming pool and numerous tennis courts, as well as two excellent play areas – perfect for younger visitors.

Flitton Moor

A moorland in the Middle Ages, this 6.9-hectare outdoor area is now a thriving nature reserve. Here you’ll find a wealth of flowers, grasslands and trees, as well as a fen, wetland and two ponds. Vehicle access to the park is not permitted, nor is there any parking – so it’s a perfect spot for those who want to enjoy a stroll in the Bedford countryside far from the noise and smell of traffic.

Priory Country Park

Priory Country Park is a 360-acre green space, part of which is located next to the River Ouse. The park features woodland, lakes and meadows, as well as reed beds, where you can find all manner of water birds. The beautifully maintained outdoor area is one of only five parks in Bedford to have attained the Green Flag Award – a benchmark of excellence for outdoor spaces in the UK.

Russell Park

Located by the Embankment in Bedford, this beautiful open-air area is great for a fun family day out. The park has plenty in the way of trees and greenery, as well as a fantastic children’s play area with swings, sandpits and a castle-inspired climbing frame. During the summer, Russell Park welcomes a number of itinerant attractions, including fun fairs, a kite festival and live music.
